with reference to my despatch dated tanking Jme 6th,
forwarding copies of the draft resty relating to jurisdictiona
over British subjecte in hina, I presume that it remine the desire of His Majesty's Coverment if possible to
reach a final settlement with the hinese Government an
the subject of Extraterritoriality well before the end of
the year in order to avoid forcing the issue raised by
the hinese Handate of May 4th providing for the ass1200tion
of jurisdiction over foreinera as from January 1st, 1958;
end that you will accordingly wish me, if internal political conditions are in the meantis sufficiently stabilised, to return to Hanking way early in Reptember with a view to reaming the negotiations and if possible signing
the rest.
8. If the work so far sccomplished is approved and accepted by both is in jantz's Government and the Chinese
Government, little or no further negotiation should be neoɑzkary, with the probable exception of Article XVI on
which I anticipate a further hard struggle; but if that
goes through, it will then only remain to supply me with
